Earthly Undertones
Forty Hall welcomes experimental art installation Earthly Undertones over the weekend of Saturday 23rd to Sunday 24th March, 11am-4pm. Earthly Undertones is a collaboration between two Enfield Festival of Industry partners: poet and industrial chemist Anthony Fisher of Enfield Poets (poets in residence at Forty Hall), and artist Cath Carver of Colour Your City (a local arts practice). The exhibition incorporates Anthony’s Londinium poem with Cath’s colourful audio visual installation and reflections on local industry.
Londinium by Anthony Fisher is a visceral and highly sensory poem, unearthing the layers of human history found in the soil just below our feet. In celebration of London’s rich diversity, Anthony then had the poem translated into 38 languages.
Cath Carver is creating an immersive audio visual installation in response. The experimental experience will dig into the nature of the poem within the context of industry: highlighting the need for deep respect of the Earth and human cooperation to navigate the future ahead – and the role each of us have to play.
The poem will be broadcast through LOSS – a sound system designed by artist-maker Rosie Strickland. The sound system is made from wood-turned dishes and broadcasts soundscape narratives on the relationship between ecology, humanity and technology. The speakers will tell a story of soil and diversity in collaboration with Anthony’s words and multilingual voices.
About
Enfield Poets provide opportunities for local poets to perform their work in a supportive and stimulating environment. They hold regular live shows and workshops to help local writers develop their knowledge and skills.
“London’s success, dynamism and power is mainly due to its diversity, people from all-over, 300 languages spoken, and its acceptance of all who come.” Anthony Fisher
Colour Your City is a locally-based multidisciplinary practice that uses colour to activate creativity, explore place, transform space and connect community. They work in a chromatic, civic and spatial way through design projects, multimedia installations, workshops and programming. For their festival commission, they’ve been exploring industry through the lens of colour, and gathering a unique Palette EN:IN.
“As the Festival of Industry wraps up, this installation – landing in the green of Forty Hall – will ground closing reflections with two vital aspects of industry: respect for the Earth and ecology, and the importance of human collaboration, as we navigate the future ahead. Using colour and Rosie Strickland’s LOSS sound system to bring these themes to life in an experimental experience open to all.” Cath Carver
Opening: Saturday 23rd March and Sunday 24th March 11am-4pm
Artist Cath Carver will be present on both days from 2-4pm
